First Responders Train For Emergencies And Disasters

Sheriff Richard K. Jones says his first priority is to save lives. In order to do so, he intends to expand the Emergency Response Service and Regional Swift Water Team.  Butler County is the eighth largest county in the State of Ohio with almost four hundred thousand residents. In 2017, the Butler County Communications Division received roughly one hundred thirty thousand calls for service just for the areas that are patrolled by Sheriff’s Deputies.

By expanding what he has already implemented with his first responders will save lives. The Butler County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Service (Technical Rescue) and the Regional Swift Water Team train monthly and covers Rope Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, Vehicle Extrication, Confined Spaces, and Structural Collapse.  The training also incorporates the use of a drone using a low light camera and a Thermal camera for locating victims.  The members of the teams stay current in their training to assist in any emergency that may arise in or out of Butler County.

Within the Sheriff’s Office, we currently have a Bomb Unit, Aviation, K9, Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team, Marine Patrol, and SWAT. Government restraints do not allow one single entity to have the manpower in place during a catastrophic event so the Sheriff coordinated some of these teams regionally. “We have been requested outside this jurisdiction on several occasions to assist with incidents and disasters.  Just last week our Aviation Unit responded to Pike County to assist with aerial surveillance during the arrest of murder suspects. We have been first responders since the 1800’s and that is not going to change any time soon,” said Sheriff Jones.

With the recent opinion of the Attorney General’s Office being in favor of the Sheriff in continuing his efforts, the Sheriff is excited to start his expansion. You can read the opinion here:
