Scammers Posing as U.S. Treasury Agents

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that there is a new scam trend that is not just targeting the elderly population.  There have been several reports in the last few weeks where the suspect informs the victim by phone that they are calling for the Internal Revenue Service because the victim owes back taxes that need to be collected as soon as possible.  The amount the suspect tells the victim they owe is normally between 5 and 6 thousand dollars.  The scammer will agree to a compromise if the victim offers money.

Scamming is nothing new, but the way these criminals are handling the situation is.  “The last report we received, the victim told the suspect he could get him $3,000 of the $6,485.00 he was told he owed.  The suspect then told the victim that a United States Marshal would be at the residence shortly to collect the money.  About 45 minutes later an unknown male was on the victim’s porch flashing a badge and demanding the money,” said Lieutenant Langmeyer of Investigations.

School Receives Bomb Threat in Butler County

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that around 10 AM today, an unknown suspect called the central office of Edgewood City Schools and used what sounded like a digital or computer-generated voice.  The caller indicated that the schools contained explosives.  An Edgewood employee immediately contacted the Sheriff’s Office and began evacuating the students at all three schools. Specialist Mike Grimes with the Butler County Bomb Squad said the call did not last long. “He or she said there were some explosives in one of the schools but would not say which one.  The caller hung up and the schools began their evacuations,” said Grimes.  This followed an earlier unsubstantiated threat that occurred at Talawanda High School this morning.

The schools were checked and nothing suspicious was found.  Students at Edgewood High School were permitted to leave if they had properly signed out. Students at the elementary and middle schools were permitted to return to class.  Parents that came to pick up their children were permitted to take them home.

The Butler County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad and Investigations Division will continue working on this case.  The Sheriff is asking anyone with information to please contact Sergeant Jason Rosser at 513-785-5962 or submit a tip at www.butlersheriff.org.

Elderly Woman Scammed by Caregiver

The Butler County Prosecutor’s Office and the Butler County Sheriff’s Office worked together to end a scam against an elderly female that lasted almost a year.  Nancy Jean Taylor, 49 year old female was the caregiver of an 83 year old female from Saint Clair Township.  It was discovered that Ms. Taylor somehow obtained power of attorney over the elderly woman’s estate online.  The paperwork was then notarized and that was how Taylor began stealing her money.

A report was taken back in December of last year where a complaint was made that Ms. Taylor was possibly taking money from the victim. “Initially, it appeared what she was doing was legal,” said Detective Kim Peters.  “She had the proper paperwork giving her rights to the victim’s money. I knew it wasn’t right, so the Butler County Prosecutor’s Office Elderly Taskforce, Adult Protective Services and the victim’s bank, Fifth Third, got involved and together, we were able to have her removed as power of attorney and subsequently charged for stealing from the victim.”

Sheriff Jones stated he is disgusted but not surprised.  “There is too much of this going on in this country.  I urge family and friends to become more involved with the elderly.  Ask questions, make phone calls and visit them frequently. We hear about scams all the time and the biggest target is always the elderly.  We cannot be afraid to protect them and the best way to do that is to be a little more proactive and report any suspicious activity. I am thankful of the joint effort with all involved in getting this woman arrested.  Jail is where she needs to be,” said the Sheriff.

Butler County Prosecutor Mike Gmoser stated he appreciated the assistance of the Sheriff’s Office on behalf of the Elderly Taskforce.

Ms. Taylor has allegedly stolen approximately $50,000.00 of the victim’s money.  She is charged with theft, a felony of the 2nd degree.

Most Wanted Arrest for Aggravated Burglary is Illegal Alien

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones says after his updated most wanted poster went out this week, an anonymous tip came in on the whereabouts of Ismael Rey Saldana-Biurquiz.  Mr. Saldana-Biurquiz was wanted for Aggravated Burglary, a felony of the first degree, and intimidation of a witness, a felony of the 3rd degree, by the City of Hamilton. Upon his arrest, it was found that he is here illegally. The Butler County Sheriff’s Investigations and Warrants units worked diligently for three days to track him down. “Due to his past history, I am glad he was apprehended without anyone getting hurt,” said Sergeant Rob Whitlock.

Sheriff Jones said this is one of thMUGSHOTS_34104921e many reasons he is not seeking a seat in Congress at this time. “He is extremely dangerous and has been on the run since 2006. Anyone that will break into a home while people are present is a very brazen, careless individual.  He is also accused of threatening to kill someone who was set to testify against him.  He is here illegally and is serving no great purpose in our country.  This is another example of what I have said from the beginning.  Now, if he is convicted and stays here, the citizens of this country get to pay to feed him. I don’t think that is fair at all and I believe the American people are tired of it.  I am very proud of the hard work of my staff to get him off the street,” Sheriff Jones said.
