Scammers Posing As Sheriff Deputies

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that scammers are calling people by phone posing as Sheriff Deputies.  They are calling victims and giving names and badge numbers and advising the victims that they missed a court appearance.  The scammers are then advising the victims to respond to a Kroger and place the money on a “Re Charge” Card. The victim is then asked to read off the serial number to the card via phone.  The victim is then instructed to respond to the Sheriff’s Office to turn the card in to authorities.

Scamming is nothing new, and there is always someone trying to prey on people through fear of consequence unless the victim complies.  “We never ask people for money to get out of trouble and we certainly never ask information by phone.  No one should ever provide information by phone unless they are absolutely certain who they are talking to on the other end of the line.  These criminals will say anything to scare people into doing what they want,” said Todd Langmeyer, Lieutenant of Investigations.

The Sheriff is encouraging everyone to pay attention to these types of calls and not do what the criminals are asking.  “This is a crime that will continue as long as one person becomes a victim to their demands. These criminals have a very well thought-out plan, and they are obviously not afraid to pretend like law enforcement. We have had people pose as relatives, police, friends, etc.; to try to get someone to wire money or use pre-paid cards.  Most of the time, the scammers are in another state or country,” said the Sheriff.

The Sheriff is encouraging the public to not give information or send money when contacted to do so by phone.  There is no need to report the crime to dispatch unless you have suffered a loss.  The Sheriff’s Office is conducting an active investigation on the situation at this time.

3 More Students Charged Involving Schools In Butler County

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that 3 students at 2 different Butler County schools were charged for bad decisions.

Both schools have a School Resource Officer assigned there, as do many other schools in Butler County. One student from Edgewood City Schools allegedly made statements that he was ready for another school shooting and was going to bring a gun to school. A second Edgewood City School student allegedly made threats over social media and is charged through the City of Trenton Police Department. A Madison Local School student brought knives disguised as credit cards in to the school.

All students were placed in the Butler County Juvenile Detention Center.

Subject Arrested in Madison Township

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones states that this morning at approximately 7 AM, a subject was located asleep in his vehicle at 5670 West Alexandria Road in Madison Township.  Upon further investigation, 2 handguns and a box of ammunition were located in his car.  Bryan Miller, 23 year old male was arrested immediately and brought in for questioning.  He was approximately 1200 feet from Madison School District property.

Family Pet Starved to Death, Thrown In Dumpster

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports one of the worst cases of animal neglect he has seen in several years. On February 5th, Butler County Sheriff’s Deputy Dog Wardens responded to 3298 Reflections Pointe in the City of Hamilton for report of a deceased canine left inside a cage, in a dumpster.  The dog was discovered when a resident was taking out some trash.

“The dog had a collar and a tag with a phone number that led us to the owner, Katie Schmuck,” stated Kurt Merbs, Deputy Dog Warden Supervisor. Ms. Schmuck, 21 year-old female from Hamilton, admitted leaving the dog in the care of her friend, Jacob Goodwin, 21 year-old male from Hamilton, while she was gone for a week. Mr. Goodwin told the Deputy Dog Warden he checked on the dog approximately 3 times but never let it out of the cage. Both parties stated the dog didn’t eat for about 3 weeks. The third visit to the Schmuck home is when Mr. Goodwin said he found the dog dead.

It basically starved to death in a small cage lying in its’ own excrement.  I honestly think it’s in a better place now.  I will never understand this type of cruelty.”

Both Schmuck and Goodwin were both charged with cruelty to a companion animal. Both charges are misdemeanors and their cases are pending court in the City of Hamilton.
