The Butler County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for Public Safety Telecommunicator I. The BCSO Regional Dispatch Center is a 24/7 operation. The primary responsibility of the Public Safety Telecommunicator I is call taking and fire/EMS dispatching. This employee answers 9-1-1 telephone requests for emergency services including law enforcement, medical and fire and in addition answers calls requesting general information and non-emergency requests for service. The employee obtains pertinent information for each emergency or non-emergency situation and relays the information to the appropriate responders. Must be able to handle high stress situations. This employee will receive training and certification as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD).
Good communication skills and the ability to multi-task are vital qualities for successful candidates. Candidates should have knowledge of basic English grammar, spelling and usage. Candidates should have skills to operate computer equipment and enter information into a computer using a computer keyboard, with speed and accuracy, and to make corrections as necessary. Additional abilities required of the candidate are:
- Listen and accurately obtain pertinent information from callers or field personnel in various situations
- Remember and recall information from callers and field units, i.e. the status of dispatched units, descriptions, or information either unavailable or not readily available on computer screens.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Communicate effectively with external and internal customers
- Remain calm and exercise good judgment in stressful situations which may extend for a considerable period of time.
- Read and interpret computer system responses, maps, and color codes on various workstation monitors.
- Prioritize and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Analyze available information, and make reasonable decisions in the absence of clear cut guidelines.
- Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers.
- Calm emotional or irate callers.
- Successfully complete the training program, and obtain required certifications for this position within the established time frames.
- Remain seated for extended periods of time.
The Sheriff’s Regional Dispatch Center is a 24-hour operation. Candidates must be willing and able to work assigned shifts including weekends and holidays.
Entry-Level: Prior service in a public safety dispatch center is preferred. Public Safety Telecommunicator I current starting wage is $40,487 annually with contractual step increases up to $50,693 annually.
Lateral Entry: Lateral entry candidates should have one or more years of full-time experience in a public safety dispatch center OR one or more years of previous full-time law enforcement, fire services, criminal justice agency, call center operation, paramilitary or military assignment. APCO certification highly preferred. The starting wage for lateral entry hires will be based on the level of experience, including the type, duration, training and certifications.
Additional Information: After successful completion of training, the Public Safety Telecommunicator I may, with additional training, be promoted to the position of Public Safety Telecommunicator II. Responsibilities of the Public Safety Telecommunicator II include all duties of Public Safety Telecommunicator I with the addition of Law Enforcement radio dispatching. Public Safety Telecommunicator II current starting wage is $42,723 annually with contractual step increases up to $56,800 annually.
