Anonymous Crime Tips
The Butler County Sheriff’s Office uses a completely anonymous system to receive crime tips. Tips can be submitted online, or by SMS text message.
Submitting the tip online will give you the opportunity to include far greater detail about the situation, suspects, vehicles involved, etc. Once submitted, you may follow up on your anonymous web tip with the tip ID and password provided at the time of the original submission.
SMS Crime Tips
When submitting your tip through a website isn’t an option, use SMS text messaging to anonymously provide information. The system strips out your phone number before delivering the tip to us, yet allows us to ask follow-up questions in a reply that will be routed back to you.
Instructions
- Compose a new text message to 274637
- Text the keyword “COPS” along with your tip information
- Send more information in additional text messages as needed
- Delete the messages from your phone, if it’s possible that the suspect you’re reporting might see your phone in the future
Your identity is protected – all tips are 100% anonymous. Your identify can never be discovered unless you choose to share it yourself in the tip.
If needed, an investigator can reply to your message through the system to ask a follow-up question.
Remember: If it’s an emergency, and help is needed right away, do NOT contact us this way. You will not get an immediate response. If you or anyone is in immediate danger, call 9-1-1. Stay on the line, answer the dispatcher’s questions as best you can, and ask to remain anonymous if you wish.
