Drunk Driver Causes Crash With Deputy’s Cruiser

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that on Saturday, December 13th just after midnight, one of his deputies was involved in a crash with a drunk driver.  Deputy Art Brickles was travelling south on state route 4 at the Millikin Road intersection in Fairfield Township when another driver ran the red light causing the deputy to strike the vehicle in the side.  Oscar Mendoza, 24 year old male, was driving a 1999 Toyota Corolla and had no valid license.  Mr. Mendoza did not speak English and officers had to obtain a translator at the scene to give him instructions.  Mr. Mendoza was charged with driving while intoxicated and several traffic violations.

The deputy’s cruiser sustained pretty serious damage.  “This guy was almost three times the legal limit when he went through the red light causing this crash, had no valid form of identification, and did not speak English. I’m just glad Deputy Brickles will be fine,” said Sheriff Jones.

The crash is still under investigation by Butler County S.T.A.R.T. (Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team).
