Subject Sentenced For Manufacturing Bottle Bombs

Richard K. Jones reports that Common Pleas Judge Michael Sage sentenced one of two subjects involved in manufacturing and possessing dangerous bottle bombs. In February of 2013, two months before the Boston Marathon bombings, Butler County B.U.R.N. (Butler County Undercover Regional Narcotics Taskforce) began investigating the subjects for what they thought would be narcotics and found something worse. Undercover agents were purchasing bottle bombs that were ready for detonation from Jeremy Smith, a 25 year old male from Hamilton. Sergeant Mike Hackney, supervisor of the B.U.R.N. unit stated, “Mr. Smith obviously didn’t care who he was selling to and it was relatively easy buying them from him. We gave him a little money and he handed us the explosives.”

On March 11, 2013, agents executed a search warrant at 1218 Ross Avenue in the City of Hamilton, the home of Mr. Smith. The search resulted in explosive paraphernalia along with partially completed bombs. Mr. Smith had a make-shift work area in his garage where he and 41 year old neighbor Richard Barrett were making the bombs. Mr. Barrett resided a couple doors away at 1226 Ross Avenue. Both subjects were charged with Manufacturing a Dangerous Ordinance, a felony of the 2nd degree and Unlawful Possession of a Dangerous Ordinance, a felony of the 5th degree.

The Sheriff stated, “These bombs were loaded with nails, screws, gun powder and basically whatever would cause severe damage. This was a lengthy investigation and these guys worked diligently to get this operation off the street.”
