Explosive Device Found in Liberty Township – was rendered “Safe”
Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that Deputies and the Bomb Squad were dispatched to 6366 Mauds Hughes Road in Liberty Township shortly after noon today when someone found what appeared to be an explosive device. Fire Department and EMS personnel and equipment from Liberty Township also responded to the scene. The item was determined to be an improvised explosive device (IED), of the pipe bomb variety, that appeared to have been there an extended period of time. Bomb Squad members used a tool called a “disruptor” to effectively open the end of the pipe bomb, and rendered it “safe.” Mauds Hughes Road was shut down to traffic for approximately 45 minutes during the incident, but has since re-opened. The device and contents were collected to be examined further. The incident remains under investigation.
