One Student Transported to Hospital After Madison Township Bus Crash

Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones reports that a Madison Township Elementary School student was transported by squad to the Atrium Hospital in Middletown this morning when the school bus she was riding on was rear-ended. The preliminary investigation indicates that Devin Monk, age 19, from Preble County Line Road, Middletown, was driving a 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix eastbound in the 6800 block of Michael Road in Madison Township around 8:30 am today, when he ran into the back of a stopped school bus, driven by Mark Whiteman, age 57, of Middletown. The bus was transporting 21 students, ranging from ages 6-11, and was apparently stopped with its flashers activated at the time of the crash.

Monk was not injured. A male student, age 11, complained of minor injury, was assessed by squad members, and was released to his parents who had responded to the scene. The Madison Township Squad did transport a 9-year-old female to the Atrium with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining students were transferred to another bus and were taken on to school. Parents of all the children riding the bus were contacted by the school. Monk was cited for “Failure to Maintain an Assured Clear Distance Ahead.”
