Why Senate’s immigration bill failed
For close to two years now I have been educating the public in this community and throughout the United States about the problems with illegal immigration.
It began simply with a large amount of illegal aliens in the Butler County Jail. I started with educating you about the illegal alien inmates. I then informed you about the employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens - shame on them.
Then I told you what the cost was to our schools, hospitals, courts and law enforcement. Just in this county alone, the cost to the taxpayers is in the millions of dollars. Add to that the cost to the citizens throughout the United States and that taxpayer burden is in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
I have been very critical of the federal government for not doing its job. The U.S. Senate’s job is to protect and serve the citizens of this country. At times it seems as though they have forgotten whence they came - us, the local, normal citizens of their hometown communities.
Make no mistake about the fact that the immigration system is beyond broken. I understand there are more than 200 different kinds of legal Visas that can be issued by the U.S. government - just more bureaucracy and more red tape.
The newest bill, that recently failed, failed for a reason. That reason is that the bill did not solve the problem. The problem is our border must first be secured. This same Senate bill was mostly about big money and lobbyists trying to force the issue on elected officials throughout this great country.
I have been told that close to one-half million people a year come across our borders illegally. The sheriff in Cochise County, Arizona, personally told me that 1,000 a day come across the border in his county alone.
America, for the most part, is a land of immigrants. Our ancestors came from another country to work, live and raise a family in the greatest country in the world, the United States of America.
But make no mistake, we are a nation of laws. And countless men and women have died to fight for the freedom and the privileges we enjoy.
My stance on illegal immigration has been one of toughness. The law is the law. We must enforce the law that we have. The only additional change in the law should be that our local law enforcement should have the authority to enforce the federal immigration law without having to obtain federal permission.
On the other hand, it is equally appalling that it takes close to eight years to obtain legal U.S. citizenship status. Within 90 days, law enforcement can conduct a background check and issue the right to carry a deadly weapon to anyone who meets the requirements. Again, this is local government and it works.
Having more than 200 different kinds of legal visas is so confusing even the federal government does not understand. We allow 1.2 million people to legally immigrate into the United States every year. All of the other countries in the world added together do not allow that many to become legal immigrants.
Our government should streamline the ridiculous eight year wait to a shorter period. Or maybe change the annual 1.2 million legal immigrants, to an amount negotiated by peo¬ple who know what amount this country can absorb. Sadly, it does not appear that those people are the U.S. Senate.
The land of the free and home of the brave is becoming the land of the overtaxed, overburdened and disillusioned. If the government does not get its way to allow the illegal aliens to stay, the government will probably just send even more American jobs home with the illegal immigrants.

You are to be commended for your stand against this forgneism in our Beloved Country.
The Congress is under oath to Almighty God not to exceed the boundaries. We have good “OLD’ immigration laws on the books, just enforce them. REPEAL ALL CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION that will take the teeth out of the Mexican Consolate and their suing us in our own courts and putting these border guards in jail for doing their jobs! Arm all border guards and let them go.
The Constitution of the United States very clearly says Section 4 Articles 4 “protect each of them from invasion”. IMPEACH all Congressmen who will not enforce the “OLD” law of immigration for violation of the Constitution. They are under oath to God “to defend and uphold the Constitution”.
There are simple answers to all of the American dilemma, but the enemies of our Country love the confusion.

If there’s on thing I cannot stand, it’s a person who automatically parades the one-trick pony of “YOU’RE A BIGOT!!! when they have no logical argument to present.
Sheriff, I do have a question which I’ve been mulling for awhile. Perhaps you or someone who reads the forum could answer.
As Ruth points out, Sec4 art.4 guarantees us against invasion. Could the victims of assault perpetrated by an illegal alien sue the Federal government for dereliction of this duty?
After all, hardly a day goes by that we don’t hear of someone being victimized/raped/assaulted or hit by a DUI illegal.
Thanks Mr. Jones, we need more people in LE to stand up for all LEGAL Americans, it is NOT about RACE, and it is about enforcing the rule of LAW! Period, no exceptions, you break the law, you go to Jail (or get deported)

I think I stand for many Hamilton citizens when I say that we are very proud of what you have accomplished.
Whenever I enter a store I feel as if I’m the visitor in another country! I don’t know about anyone else but I’m tired of having to turn the labels around so that it can be read in English!!! Our economy is fueling the fire. Why must we accomodate those who have not yet learned to speak english? If employers, manufacturers, and retailers would stop contributing to the problem, then maybe the United States wouldn’t seem so appealing! We are a melting pot and I’m very proud of that! I have a daughter that we adopted from china (but legally). You don’t see “Enter” written in chinese on the front door of Lowe’s do you? It makes me sick to even say i live in butler county. Maybe our sheriff should stop spending money on immigration issues and start taking care of his county. He is so about up holding the law, but why don’t he do it with his own employee’s. The second post is 100% correct. Our Federal Government is working against us. President Bush is pursuing a globalist agenda to create a North American Union. That’s why he’s not worried about our border. Behind the back of Congress, George W Bush met with the heads of state of Canada, and Mexico and signed the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America. The first step to erasing our borders completely.
Bush and Co. will continue to play games with us and try and scare us while leaving our border open to anyone in the world.
Please, please! research all the ways in which our President and Federal government our taking advantaged of us.
I’m so glad to see someone from Ohio addressing this issue. Yes, we are very far from the border and we still see the harmful effects of illegals in our country. This is NOT an issue of race, it is an issue of legality. Frankly I have been sickened by the way our government has disregarded the security of our borders and have ignored the criminals flowing into our country.
Drug dealers, murders and pedophiles walking in without regard to public safety. (Yes I said pedophiles, before you even TRY to argue against that you should research the human trafficking of little girls from Mexico into the US for use by migrant workers) How often are these people caught and released because they are “only” here illegally?

I applaud your handling of illegal aliens. I think those most responsible are the Bush Administration, the Mexican government that urges its Native American population to immigrate to the U.S., and the so-called compassionate U.S. employers who hire them knowingly or without regard for their status. The worst of these are the employers who use these disadvantaged people for their profit while increasing the ranks of the unemployed U.S. Citizens. This is a crime that deserves a harsh punishment.

Although I agree with many of your views I do however strongly disagree with your lack of respect towards illegal immigrants. Not all illegal immigrants are criminals! Have you ever reflected on the thought that they are here to better their lives and their families. I understand the biggest mistake made is not going through the process of receiving proper documentation, however after I looked into the process for facts it’s obvious it’s not an easy process. Most of all, I am disgusted by the comments you had made today in the Journal concerning the raid at Koch Foods. If you have no sympathy for these individuals, does that also mean you have no sympathy for the children who have been left behind. Some parents are single parents who have given birth to their children in the US which makes the child a citizen, what is you plan on handling this situation? Where will these children go? Talk about wasting taxpayer funds, we will now be housing more people at the jail, and Im sure the 2nd street facility. We cannot rely on our county’s children services dept, the system has failed many times before do you honestly think it could handle a situation of this sort? What about the children who receive their education in our schools? What will they do without a parent? You are correct when you say you have no sympathy for these people, you have sympathy for the innocent children who will forever be scarred by this event. You need to get your priorities in order, do something about the drug dealers who walk within feet of our schools, the prostitutes. At least some of the immigrants just want a better life!
Sheriff Jones: Bravo to you for your determination to rid this country of illegal criminals no matter where they come from. I live north of Chicago in a town that is crawling with illegal Mexicans. These people run the schools and businesses, and are getting more and more control of the government. In this town teachers who don’t speak Spanish are being demoted (8 so far) and our friends couldn’t get their 5 year-old into an English-speaking kindergarten…but there were plenty of Spanish speaking ones available. It makes me sick to see how our government has sold Americans and legal immigrants out to these vulgar criminals who don’t have the respect to come here legally or even learn English. Just another example of how politcians only care about votes.
You are a shining example of how law enforcement should be treating these identity thieves and chronic criminals (just check how many reports of rape and child molesting are committed by perpetrators with Hispanic names, along with DUIs, for those screaming racism about this blog!) and other officers need to follow your example. I don’t mind people coming here LEGALLY (like my dad’s side of my family had to, WAY back when, when they came through Ellis Island - mom’s family are Native American), but I think that every illegal immigrant should be tossed back to whatever country they come from until such time as they do the RIGHT THING and come here, legally. Got a kid at home? YOU TAKE THE RISK when you work illegally that you won’t be home that night to take care of that child. It kills me that we’re supposed to feel bad for these parents who are here teaching their children it’s OK to not obey the law. Who the hell do they think they ARE??
Having a child here just so you have an “anchor” for staying is BS and those children should be sent back to WHEREVER, as well, right along with the parents. I am tired of people being label “racist” when they try to protect our country. I agree with a whole-hearted crack down on illegal immigration. What is so “racist” about saying no to illegal immigration? Yes, they are law breaking people. They broke the law by coming here illegally. I want them to go back to where they came from and come back the right way - legally. I do not agree with the bunk that they are doing jobs we Americans won’t. They are here illegally. They take jobs that could be used as jobs for our unemployed. I have no sympathy for the illegals. I do not care they have kids born here. The kids can go back with the parents. The Ammendment (#14) to the Constitution says that children of people from other countries are NOT American unless the parent becomes American. Look it up. It specifically talks about people whose juristdiction is another country. Most of these people do not want to become American, they just want to work here. If they come via the long and legal route, I will help as much as possible. Otherwise, go home, fix your own country.
Regarding the comments by ABW, just for clarification, illegal immigrants are automatically criminals because they have entered the country illegally. Please understand that the United States and all developed nations in the world do not make provisions for economic refugees – as illegal immigrants from Mexico actually are.
The American Government and the American worker should not be obligated to look after the citizens of Mexico because of the failures and corruption of their government – especially at the cost of American jobs, American security, the American legal system, the American healthcare system, and the American educational system.
Illegal immigrants are depriving this nation’s own children of the full education that they deserve. Our school systems are forced to remove billions of dollars paid by the American tax payer, that have been allocated for their children, and divert the money to children if illegal immigrants, whose parents do not pay taxes.
Billions of dollars that should be allocated to protecting your communities are being diverted to enforce ineffective immigration laws along Mexico’s border states. Over 20 hospitals in California closed in 2006 because they were bankrupted providing medial services to illegal immigrants who were not paying taxes, and were doing the work that should have been done by the American worker.
I can only ask why you would choose to deprive America’s children of the proper education and healthcare that they deserve and the proper security and police services that your community deserve? Why do expect everyone else to do with less and do without so that 20 million people who have no legal right to be here in the first place can have what you have?

Illegal aliens are lawbreakers, plain and simple. They do not respect our sovereign nation, and do not respect our tax laws, ect.
I am sickened by those who say we are discriminating against hard working, law abiding people, and are just a bunch or racists, or hatemongers. That simply isn’t true; we wish to see the rule of law enforced, no matter where the illegal comes from!
When your first act on our soil is breaking the law with your illegal presence, and continued illegal presence, you are NOT law abiding.
I also don’t care about their children being frightened. If they were good people, they wouldn’t have put their children in the position of living with a criminal parent who might be the target of an immigration raid in the first place!
These parents should put their children in foster care for adoption, or take them back to their homeland until they are of age to decide where they wish to live, since they are by our current laws American citizens… But stop blaming the American people who wish to see the law enforced for the illegal’s irresponsibility. No one forced them to come here illegally and have children. PERIOD.

For all of you that think these illegal mexicans (including south americans), are here because they are so ‘poor’ and trying to better themselves….WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE!!!! They deliberately move into low income housing along with several other families and split the rent. They can then afford to buy new cars (many pay cash for brand new cars), have cable tv, purchase cars and appliances which they take back to their country (check with our border patrol and you’ll find this to be accurate and correct). The majority of their income is sent back to their home country…not to support family…but to buy land, houses, ranches, businesses. Most American citizens will never be able to afford such luxuries. Investigate the companies that transfer the money from the USA to Mexico and South America and you will find that millions of dollars are being transfered this way. These illegals pay little to no taxes, and if they have children born in the USA, they give a legal citizen the right to claim that child on their taxes, thus gaining the earned income credit, which is then split 50/50 between the illegal and legal. That is usually about $3000.00.
I work 40+ hours per week and struggle just to make ends meet. I drive a 10 year old car and can’t even afford cable. Is this the price that we must pay for being American citizens? To watch these illegals rip off this country? I for one think we deserve better.

I grew up on the west coast. I live on the east coast. I am NOT from the midwest. I see illegals in Prince Georges county using food stamps. I know they are illegals. I hear the conversations. I see them crowding into small apartments. I see them using other people’s id. Trust me - been there, done that and paid the tax bill - yes, me. I am neither fat, lazy, or intolerant. I am fed up with paying for people who are not here legally. My daughter in law is from Australia and I know the hoops they made her go through to just get a visa. She spent a lot of time and money to come here legally. She thinks it is worth it. Next time you characterize someone as being fat, lazy and intolerant, find out more of the FACTS. I work and live in multi-cultural neighborhoods. My life nor my tax bill was easy thanks to someone here illegally. Illegal means against the law and not a victimless crime. Illegals are not immigrants, they are illegal aliens.You try to get credit after someone messed yours up. You try to keep a security clearance with someone else using your SS#. You find out someone got a checking account with your identity. When you have walked the miles I have, then you can talk to me about illegalls. Until you have been a victim of the problem, don’t spout about it. I am very much against criminals coming in and taking over and expecting us to pay for them.
I got into this blog because I saw someone willing to speak out and work on the problem. Obviously you are victim of the media’s trying to make out these people are poor unfortunates. Read the crime statistics. Read what people who have been victimes of them say. Learn of which you talk before you call people names. I was that person who was victimized and I resent you characterizing me as fat, lazy and intolerant. If you had been one of my children I would have told you to aplogize for name calling. I will just assume you simply spouted off before knowing the facts involved. THAT is tolerance.

I applaud sheriff Jones for what he did. I worked at the Koch plant in Fairfield I am an American and because I spoke my mind abut the discrimination against the Americans that work there after being there for years my boss fired me. It was well known in that plant that there were alot of illegals working there. The hiring managers knew they were illegal. I worked along side of them and got to know them but when i was terminated who do you think replaced me. Its to bad they did not get all of them because 2 days later the 2nd shift illegals and 3rd shift were told to come back to work and did. Its sad that us Americans are out of work because companies can pay low wages to illegals and still get away with it,
Sheriff Jones, I sure wish you would consider a run for Senator in Ohio. You could easily replace either one of these jokers we have in there now. Only problem I can see, is that I would lose the best Sheriff we have ever had, in Butler County. Been here over 40 years in West Chester I know what I am talking about. With false accusations from an immigrant residency seeker and the help of VAWA laws, a stable American citizen can be reduced to living in poverty. I commend you Sheriff for standing up and taking action against illegal alliens. I have no problem with any person coming to the United States to make a better life for their family. As long as they come here legally and they follow the laws. I believe they should have to work and pay taxes like everyone else. But those that come here illegally should be sent back. Those that are hiring the illegals should be prosecuted to the fullest.
