Clean Up The 4th Ward

As most of you already know I recently took a walking tour of the 4th ward which surrounds the Sheriff’s Office. I observed the area to be in unacceptable condition and I believe this problem needs to be addressed. I wrote a letter to the city manager describing what I saw and asking the city to give attention to the area. The residents of the 4th ward and my employees who work in the area deserve safe conditions. I have posted the letter below so that you can read it for yourselves.

I am amazed at you Sheriff Jones. You have an amazing sixth sense. You can tell human feces from dog feces just like you can tell an illegal immigrant from a legal immigrant. Amazing!!!! To think that you are wasting your time in small time Butler County, you should really take your act on the road and join the circus the next time it comes to town.

I hope the city takes your constructive comments seriously. My wife often has to drive through that neighborhood and I worry when she does so late in the evening. Cleaning up the neighborhood and restoring the residents’ pride in it would go a long way toward making it a safer area.

Oh, and Amy; dog poop is usually easily distinguished from the human variety without the benefit of any sixth sense.

Geez Amy, what could possibly be your objection to the sherif trying to get a bad area of his district cleaned up? You obviously have an agenda of your own but seem to be unable to articulate it.

Personally I admire the Sheriff in that he’s willing to take a lot of guff and jabs from people that don’t have half the guts that he does. It’s almost as if people want the sheriff to fail because they have some kind of death wish for Butler county to turn in to a ghetto.

Sorry but I don’t think Sheriff Jones is going to allow a handful of people who have no pride in their community to destroy it for the people who want Butler county to be a decent place to live.

Why would someone be negative about the comments Sheriff Jones made about the 4th ward? I agree with Sheriff Jones 100%. I am amazed at the condition the 4th ward is in. The majority of the houses are in poor condition with garbage covering front porches and lawns. Children roaming the streets at night without adult supervision. It’s also obvious that a great amount of drug activity occurs in the area. Read the police reports in the Sunday paper to verify. And what about woman standing on the corners waiving cars down to follow them into an alley? Would it not make since for the Sheriff to step in and point out that this area is a disgrace to Hamilton? The 4th ward is not the only area in Hamilton that needs attention but it is by far the worse. We should take pride in the areas we live. We should feel safe in our community’s and not have to be embarrassed by an eyesore within our city. So I say to you Amy, Sheriff Jones is right. Why should he overlook garbage, criminals, drug activity, and gang activity ect? Is he not doing his job? Just another person upset that the Sheriff has spoke the truth. Thank You Sheriff Jones for taking the steps in trying to clean up a disgrace in our community

As long as there are persons like Amy who seem to love the indecent and hate the decent, nothing will be done. I really don’t understand what they are thinking. I went down to pickup my CCW and couldn’t believe the area around the Department. It looked like a foreign country, complete with foreign flags. Keep up the great work, Sheriff, we need people like you more than ever. Thanks

Has anyone stopped to think that maybe the problem with the Fourth Ward isn’t that the “people have no pride in their community” but that they are in an economic situation prevents them from cleaning the place up? The Fourth Ward is a poor neighborhood, filled with-gasp-the working poor. I don’t know about you, J, Amber, and David, but I’m usually tired enough after working all day that I really don’t have the energy to take out the trash, let alone go out and organize a neighborhood clean-up. Maybe if the people of the Fourth Ward had some economic assistance, better jobs, etc, they would have the energy and money to put more effort into their neighborhood.
Oh, and Sheriff, aren’t “pimps, prostitutes, drug dealers and the violence on the streets” crimes and, therefore, YOUR job to combat? Just a thought.

    Dear Sheriff Jones,

I live in Lindenwald, and there is a huge drug trafficking problem on my street. I have tried several times to inform the Hamilton City Police Department of the problem but have been told “that’s Lindenwald, maybe you should move.” That is not Lindenwald. There are several very nice families in this neighborhood either young families just starting out or older couples still in their first homes trying to retain what was once a great place to live.

I am at my wits end… what avenue would you suggest that I take next to help rid our street of this problem?

Thank you for your attention to this matter and all the hard work that the Butler County Sheriff’s Officers do.
