Cold Case Solved!

I’m writing today to call attention to our Cold Case Homicide Specialist Frank Smith. For those that may not know, Frank has recently gotten a conviction on a homicide case that has been open since 1974! I’m especially proud to be able to work with dedicated people like Frank Smith, Butler County Prosecutor Robin Piper and assistant prosecutors Dan Eichel and Glen Rossi.

This is the fourth cold case that Frank has solved and his fourth conviction! The people of Butler County should be proud to know how dedicated these fine people are to finally bringing justice to criminals who have commited heinous crimes and thought they got away with it for so many years. The closure it brings for the victims families is immeasurable.

Even as you read this, Frank is working on his other cold cases to see justice served as well. The local Hamilton Journal-News has published a couple of stories that can be read here.

Thank you for giving closure to the families of victims of violent crime who thought they were never going to see justice. You are a hero!!

We are overrun with illegals – illegals driving newer cars, trucks and vans than we, the middle class citizens work for every day – but we have to pay insurance, drivers license fees, license plate charges etc. and the illegals just drive anywhere, if they are in an accident, they run and hide and we have to pay for uninsured motorists insurance – all their documents are fake and last forever and since they don’t pay insurance and transfer license plates to different vehicles every other month – they have tons of money to send back home. In fact, that incoming money is the 2nd largest income for their country – they label it tourism. They don’t pay for medical, so the first thing they do is have children so they can be citizens . How can we grant citizenship so freely – and give away money and services for medical care to someone who has been here, maybe a month? I can barely afford to go the doctor- by the time I pay my deductible and percentage of what insurance does not pay. The middle class citizens are loosing out – fewer jobs, unaffordable housing prices, smothered in insurance debt and no one cares. Yes, Sheriff Jones should go door to door and boot them out – in fact, we don’t need a wall around the US – we need a dome – with a sign KEEP OUT and a door that opens one way. We cannot afford to let this continue. There needs to be laws that protect the existing citizens – limit the number of occupants for housing, have vehicle checkpoints to inspect license and insurance documents (if invalid-confiscate it, put them in jail, sell the vehicle and use the money to send them back) Other countries have walls – Spain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, India, Morocco, Ireland, Korea – we are not alone – we must take care of business in the US – take care of existing problems with unemployment, medical care, housing , welfare, then we can allow others to enter legally and reap the benefits of this great country. The way things are going – there won’t be anything to get – hospitals are closing, cities are going bankrupt trying to accommodate illegals by hiring interpreters for police, fire and health departments – I am tired of paying other people’s bills – let me reap the benefits – let’s clean it up – GO SHERIFF JONES!!!!

Thank you Sheriff Jones for being the ONE of the FEW who are taking a stand for the people you represent regarding illegals. I am tired of the political correctness that is taking place in this country. I dont understand why we are treating illegals like special guests when they should not be in the country in the first place. Illegals are stealing benefits earned by American citizens and should be punished accordingly.

    Kudos to Det. Smith!

It is heartening to know that we have such skilled men and women working to protect us!

OT- I saw the billboard regarding illegal immigrants… FANTASTIC!

  8. Comment by Susan Frazee @ June 20, 2006, 7:25 am

Sheriff Jones, you are to be commended! I’m glad to see local officials like you taking the ball and running with the ongoing immigration problem. Perhaps more local leaders will follow your lead. The flow of illegal immigration can only be stemmed by the federal government pushing down a little responsibility to those in the towns that know where illegals hang out. Good work! You’re a hero to many of us across this great nation of ours!

  9. Comment by Sarah C @ June 20, 2006, 9:24 am

I am just wondering who paid for those billboards. Given that the sheriff has no jurisdition to prosecute immigration since it’s a federal crime…I guess those billboards are just a way for the sheriff to use public funds to put his picture up over the highway. What’s next, a run for county commissioner?

Bottome line: stop misusing the public’s money!

  10. Comment by Joe @ June 20, 2006, 10:17 am

    Sarah,
I did a little research and found out that local law enforcement does have the power to enforce the federal law against hiring illegal aliens. Thats what the billboard is about, so it appears perfectly legal.

  11. Comment by Joshua @ June 20, 2006, 12:27 pm

PLEASE come be the mayor of my town! I’m proud that someone like you is stepping up and doing something about these CRIMES against Americans!

  12. Comment by Sarah C @ June 20, 2006, 2:44 pm

    Dear Joe,
States and local governments cannot charge businesses with hiring illegal immigrants - that’s a federal responsibility. Only Immigration and Customs Enforement, a federal agency, can do that.

There are laws that allow the Dept of Homeland Security to work with state and local officials to investigate, arrest, and apprehend illegal immigrants. However, the prosecution of employers is a responsibility wholly reserved for the federal government.

I’d say the Sheriff’s bark is a lot bigger than his bite.

  13. Comment by Shannon @ June 20, 2006, 2:51 pm

If the Sheriff can prosecute employers, why hasn’t he done it yet? He recently had 18 alleged illegal immigrants in his custody and he had to let them all go! What kind of enforcement is that?

  14. Comment by Joe @ June 20, 2006, 4:28 pm

Ohio has a state law mimicking the federal law against hiring undocumented workers. Therefore the law is enforceable by an Ohio Sheriff’s Office. I don’t remember what the law was off hand but I will see if can I look it up again.

  15. Comment by Sarah C @ June 20, 2006, 4:38 pm

Ohio law cannot trump federal law. If, in fact, Ohio has a law allowing the state to prosecute employers, it probably would not hold up in court.

But if you can get your hands on it, Joe, I’d be interested in knowing what it says or where I can read it online.

  16. Comment by Gregory @ June 20, 2006, 5:32 pm

    Dear Debbie,

Just a quick question. I can’t speak for the other countries that you mentioned in your tirade but I have lived in Spain and traveled through virtually every major city and region of the country. I don’t really remember seeing any significant wall that would prevent people from entering. Would you mind providing me with the location of this wall? I will definitely make it a stop on my next visit (great photo-op). Thanks.

  17. Comment by Andrew @ June 20, 2006, 8:46 pm

As a butler county taxpayer, and US soldier currently stationed elsewhere, and a son of a LEGAL Immigrant, thank you for your work against ILLEGAL Immigration.
If I break the law I get pounded, if they break they law, they get released. if they have been breaking the laws for long enough some think they should get “rewarded” with amnesty, This country has gone insane, thank you for re-inserting common sense into the domestic equation.
This issue is close to me since I had to deploy to the border last year to work with the border patrol, to be on the front lines of defending our borders directly. Not only from “undocumented” aliens but also the drug smugglers and other trans-national threats that blend in with them on the trek northward.
Its time to stand up for our laws.
You have my vote sheriff. Keep it up.

  18. Comment by Cindy @ June 21, 2006, 7:12 am

Though I live in Texas, I am all too well aware of the difficulty presented to law enforcement by the illegals. Our son is a police officer in a nearby small town. His frustration with the problem grows daily. He tells about the illegals who move from one group of relatives or friend to the next, changing their names as they go. He tells of those families or friends hiding, protecting, and lying for the illegals. He tells of ICE either being unwilling or unable to respond to the department’s requests for assistance. The result of all these difficulties is the impunity with which these illegals can commit crimes and walk away unscathed. Officers in his department feel as though the present ’system’ and laisez-faire attitude toward illegals leave them virtually hogtied when it comes to apprehending, arresting and holding them. The problem of illegal aliens isn’t about them being nice people (re: and earlier comment), it’s about the financial drain on community resources, as well as state and federal programs. Simply put, it’s about the LAW. More power to you, Sheriff Jones, for standing up for enforcement and devoting a portion or your energy and resources to prodding the federal government to do the same!

  19. Comment by Joe @ June 21, 2006, 9:57 am

I haven’t had time to go back through state code but to simplify this: states have laws and their is federal law and they don’t “trump” each other. You have two sets of law to follow. I can easily give you the federal law regarding hiring aliens which is enforceable and that is USC 1324a. The majority of federal law is enforceable by state agencies (examples would be rape or murder). The code which is only enforceable by ICE is 1324 and it is about arresting people for being illegal aliens. The Sheriff could arrest employers or people presenting fake documents. The Sheriff could not arrest people just for being illegal.

  20. Comment by Sarah C @ June 21, 2006, 2:18 pm

Joe, I continue to disagree. You may think that an internal Ashcroft memo, that was inadvertantly released some time ago, gives you this authority; but that is not the case. Ohio does not have a Memorandum of Understanding with DHS to arrest, detain, or prosecute employers of illegal aliens.

Only ICE can set forth an investigation on employers. And punishment is usually a monetary fine - NOT prision.

If the Sheriff tried to overstep his authority, the case would be thrown out of court.

However, if you find the Section of the ORC that you think gives state and local officals authority to do such actions, please share it so that I can read it over.

  21. Comment by Shannon @ June 22, 2006, 9:32 am

I am amazed at how everyone on this blog is so quick to assume that his or her citizenship was deserved and that those not lucky enough to have been born in the States are just SOL. What makes any of you better than anyone else? Ironic that the same people living in the “bible belt” are so quick to cast aside fellow human beings. I was raised in Butler County (as were all of my aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.), but thankfully (and I recognize this now), I chose to move to a more open minded, welcoming community.

You are not only chasing away immigrants, but you are chasing away educated, incoming earning people from my generation. At this rate, the economy in Butler County is going to flop.

  22. Comment by JT @ June 23, 2006, 10:20 pm

Shannon, EVERY country on this planet has guidelines in place for dealing with immigration. I defy you to name a country where you can walk right in, follow no guidelines, meet no requirements and be handed citizenship. I won’t bother waiting because you won’t be able to come up with such a country because there is none.
Immigration guidelines are necessary to make sure that the immigrants aren’t ill so as to protect the health of the population, to ensure that the population isn’t over burdened with the cost of taking care of a sick and unhealthy immigration population and exposing others to contagious diseases.
Guidelines are also required to protect the native population from criminal elements as well.
Guidelines are also required to make sure that the immigrants are able to be self supporting so as to not be a financial burden to the taxpayers of the host country.
How you can equate wanting to protect the legal citizens of this country from being exposed to people with possible contagious diseases, criminals and trying to avoid being financially drained as being narrow minded makes absolutely no sense.

BTW, stick to FACTS instead of veiled insults such as referring to people who disagree with you as being members of ‘the Bible belt.’ You lose all credibility with passive agressive tactics like that.

FWIW, Butler county’s economy is robust and continually growing. Hopefully the economy in your new open minded community is doing equally as well.

  23. Comment by Andrew @ June 24, 2006, 9:29 pm

shannon, “dont be so open minded that your brain falls out”. Its called ius soli, (right to the soil) and many other nations have it. Globalists like to think of the world as one happy village and everone has the same rights, from the terrorists plucked off the battlefields to the red blooded american, to the guatemalan trying to get through Mexico’s southern (militarized, walled) border. But not everyone has the same rights, which is why citizenship has its privileges. Which is a very good reason to stand in line and do it the legal way. To people like shannon, the soverieignty of nations and the laws theirin are not important, the meaning of citienship is lost, if it should just be handed out to anybody for the mere reason that they want it. To those here, it was earned by ius soli, to others it was earned with patience, paperwork, and at the least, a basic respect for our laws and sovereinty as a nation, not a contempt for it. I think shannon was cheated out of a basic civics education when she was in school.

    Sheriff Jones,

Good for you…..good for you….good for you!
Your county is blessed to have you working to protect them and their rights. You have bravely taken the politically incorrect stand against these illegal aliens. The cost of allowing our borders to be so porous is destroying the quality of life of all the citizens of the USA whether or not they are willing to give it voice or even admit it.
So how about moving to Dickson Co. Tennessee—we need you ! Or a little run for the presidency?????
Keep up the good work and stay strong….the whole country is watching and cheering you on to success.

I believe that Sheriff Jones has the right idea. He understands how much of a drain the illegal aliens are putting on our society, and doesn’t want to put up with it. Our government provides ILLEGAL immigrants with food stamps, free health insurance and section eight housing. Being an illegal alien really pays off. They don’t have to take responsibility for themselves or their actions because they are constantly having their battles fought for them, on top of having the government hand them things that we work hard for. I think this is absolutely ridiculous. Americans have to work hard to get the things that we need, (ex. license plates tags, insurance etc. (as Debbie stated before), housing, food) while they have all they could ever want and more. I’m tired of my tax dollars going to someone else’s free ride. I work to earn everything I have, they should too.

Thank you. Men & women of action and courage are what we need to save our country (if we can in our 11th hour). Just caught you on CNN/Lou Dobbs. Good man! Hell of a tough battle. My 18 year old son and I have been trapped in NY for years, in a nightmare that goes on forever and will curl your hair and outrage you. As Americans, we are less than garbage. I am terminal, but will have ’some’ money soon. I have been searching for a place to buy a home and try to save my son’s future, since he has been robbed of literally everything, including hope, an education, and his health. He does, however, come from the best of genes in intelligence, heart, and character. Saving his future and settling him in a good place is my duty. You have put your town on my list. Don’t be apprehensive. Take this as a compliment. Keep up the good work. Again, thank you…from a fellow American. jt

  29. Comment by Lisa @ July 11, 2006, 10:20 pm

You all have good points on illegal immigration…..but what is not being talked about is the AMERICAN women who have children with illegals….. I have 4 kids by an illegal alien he works everyday and pays taxes..we don’t live on welfare or get any of them benifits ……all the money he pays into taxes we can’t file at the end of the year and recieve any of it back……we have been trying to get his papers for about a year but if there is no law in place that gives them a chance to file it is nearly impossible to do…. Me and my kids live in fear everyday he goes to work to provide for his family that he will be deported and then i will have to go get on welfare and have the tax payers pay for me and my kids…… and to S.C. illegal aliens CAN NOT get public housing if you see them living there it is because they have thier papers… also they don’t get welfare for themselves they get for their kids that are born here and are AMERICAN citizens….so get the facts before you comment on that…

Here is another thought for all of you ….. say that sheriff Jones rids this county of all illegals what will happen to all these stores that are catering to the illegals and what about all the money they are bring into the economy? everyone is worried about them making money and sending it to thier families back in their counties but what about all the money they pay for food, rent, utilities, gas, car insurance (some of them do have it ), and everything else Americans pay for they might be able to send 50 to 100 dollars to thier families every week or two by time they pay thier bills….. I think Sheriff Jones wants headlines and national attention for political reasons…….we have bigger problems in Butler County than the illegals being here look at the hookers, and crack heads on every corner why don’t Sheriff Jones do something about that first……. to a comment i read earlier about local government being able to enforce immigration laws that is false for local government to be able to do that they have to have special training and go through a course to be certified as an ICE agent to enforce them laws ………..if Sheriff Jones could enforce them laws why did them 18 illegals he took into custody get released? because he had no right to arrest them in the first place the call was over a fight between 2 groups of construction workers the only reason they were taking into custody was because they were illegal why didn’t the other American construction workers get detained also?

  30. Comment by Anonymous @ July 13, 2006, 7:50 pm

Wonder why Ford, GM, Maytag and most US companies are going down?? fact is, most americans are not willing to DO the job ‘illegal immigrants’ can and will perform unless they get paid $16/hour…at those rates a Happy Meal would cost you $9… I would be fair to say that Mr Butler is just running a racist campaign that’s been going on for hundreds of years… blah blah blah… All of you people at least have the balls to admit you’re running a racist campaing instead of blaming the brown people for taking your jobs… Maybe then I’ll respect what you’re trying to do… Marco

    lisa,
I would like to address your comments on having children from an illegal immigrant. I too have four children and I cant imagine the fear that you have when their father is in danger of being deported. I cannot pretend to understand what you are going through. However, where should America draw the line on immigration? Should we allow illegals to stay here because they have children here? As much as I would like to say that they should be able to stay, I dont think it is responsible of us to do that. Do you think that would increase the amount of children born to illegal immigrants? I am not sure, but I would venture to say that it would. I would like to believe that the America, a free society, would welcome all people searching for a better life. But unfortunately a line must be drawn somewhere when a strain is put on the economy and on our welfare systems. We have an immigration system, all be it far from perfect, in place for a reason. We cant allow people to enter our country without the proper procedures being followed. Americans who are here legally, should not have to carry the financial burden of those who are here illegally. That is what most of this boils down to..money. I would love to have the perfect society in a perfect world, but unfortnately that is not realistic. I believe that we the have the closest to a perfect society in America and we are charged to protect it.

This is America, land of the free, free to travel, free to come and go as we please. Home of the brave, where we are unafraid of people from different cultures or far away lands. The land of opportunity, where with hard work and determination anyone can come and build a good life for thenselves and their families.
If you want to keep people out or hold people down because of where they were born, or because of skin color, or because of cultural differance, it is you that needs to leave America.

  33. Comment by alb @ July 31, 2006, 3:44 pm

I’m still amazed at the ignorance of people who can’t seem to understand (or don’t want to understand)the difference between legal and illegal.
No one should worry about the legal immigrants; they have earned their citizenship, and are welcome.
It is the illegals who are too lazy or ignorant to go through the process of gaining citizenship.
I guess it’s just another example of wanting something for nothing - i.e. all the perks of living in the U.S. without the responsibility of earning those perks.
Remember, liberalism is the cancer that will destroy America.

They rely on their children to tell them what everything is in stores, I have heard it over and over. Kansas City needs a man like Sheriff Jones…. There is actually a BUS LINE that runs directly into southern Texas, Arizona, New Mexico …. When they come back ALL THAT GETS OFF OF IT IS MEXICANS, THEY ARE PACKED IN THE BUS. NONE OF THEM CAN HARDLY SPEAK ENGLISH, THEY GET THEIR BAGS, AND WALK IN ALL DIRECTIONS…. KINDA MAKES A PERSON WONDER IF IT IS A BUS-LINE OR 1 WAY RIDE TO THE HEART OF AMERICA. IF THEY WANT TO BECOME LEGAL CITIZENS, COME FORWARD, LEARN OUR LANGUAGE, GET LEGAL PAPERS, AND FIND A JOB THATS FINE, BUT GIVING ILLEGALS IMMUNITY FOR THE CRIME THEY HAVE COMMITTED IS WRONG…

The majority of Americans who rent movies can’t return them on time. i wonder what would happen if they had to face the tedious, time-consuming, and overwhelming process of trying to get citizenship in a country when they aren’t fluent in the language. I’m not saying that there aren’t people who are lazy, but I’ve noticed more people pointing fingers than trying to help these immigrants. Xenophobia is a plague that is fueled by our own frustrations over the state of our economy. Immigrants should not be the scapegoat for a multitude of problems we are facing as Americans.

  36. Comment by nancy @ September 18, 2006, 8:23 pm

I have no problem with immigrants, but they need to come here legally, and yes Jorge Lopez I do know some mexicans and I really got to know them well did all kinds of things to help their family out then I discovered how mean he was to his Gf and kids and wouldnt let them eat but 1 time a day and beat gf and drank and used a variety of drugs and let the baby run naked wouldnt buy diapers would only say thats how it is in Mexico, well if your here do right.
I would take this 1 mexican back to mexico myself and pick up 5 more that would do right if I could. This country is a melting pot from day 1 but they mostly came here legally. I know some been here a long long time its when the crime and violence started to increase when its a problem. Learn what this country’s all about , everyone, listen to the words of our songs (patriotic) our constitution bill of rights etc. if you like it here great get legal then welcome to america

Jones, you are a disgrace to your badge. You should be doing work to
actually protect Butler County from crimes perpetrated against residents,
not exceeding your non-federal (county) jurisdiction hunting down illegal
aliens. It’s unfortunate that you seek political agrandizement for your
personal-racist agenda rather than caring for the people you are supposed to
protect. You ought to be stripped of the police costume you wear and given
a uniform that reflects your motives and intentions in this community-a
    white gown and hood.
