President is starting to get it!
After watching President Bush’s address Monday night, I have to score him a 9 out of 10. I think he’s starting to finally understand that the will of the people is *not* to provide amnesty or instant citizenship for the millions of illegal aliens. Unlike several weeks ago, I actually found myself agreeing with most of what he’s proposing. I still feel it’s still not enough in some areas, but I like that he’s pushing for more authority for local law enforcement and tightening up the border security.
It’s starting to look like our messages are finally being heard in Washington! What do you think about President Bush’s address?
If you missed it, a transcript can be read here
50 Cheers–one for each of our states–to you for taking ACTION on the hiring of illegal aliens! IF every sheriff in this nation would ENFORCE the existing law, we would not need new ones. Once the job magnet is removed, self-deportation would occure. We need to send a message that we are not going to reward those who have broken our laws! THANK YOU for taking the lead in what I hope will be a long line of sheriffs doing what is necessary.
Agreed. Ya’ know it only takes about 2 weeks to process a work visa for immigrants… This would change them from illegal to LEGAL immigrants, and grant them the rights that are given to them under our great nation. Instead of STEALING the benefits and rights that we as citizens pay for.
I also agree with the fact that if there were more Sheriff’s like you, following this train of thought…the ILLEGAL immigration problem would be minimized.
Well done, and God bless!
ok, let me get this right… the ACLU and the feds say that the Sheriff cannot detain POSSIBLE illegal aliens, only the feds have that right… SOOO, what is to prevent someone, who holds a deputys interest, from just saying “no habla”. The way I read it, the deputy would be prevented from any action against this person.
Thank you Sheriff Jones! I hope and pray that every Sheriff will eventually take a stand as you have. I fear the Federal Government will fail to stem the tide of illegal aliens entering the U.S. and things will continue as they have for the past 20 years. I have lived within 5 miles of the Mexican border since 1970 and I have an understanding of immigration problems and their effect on crime statistics for local law enforcement agencies. I could go on and on but will close by saying keep up the good work and preach to your State Police and Sheriff’s organizations!
Sincerely,
Clay Wolf
Our president and the Senate have made some progress but the still don’t get it. The Senate bill passed today allows for 200,000 more illegals every year. The token force of extra border patrol agents would be laughable were it not for the fact that our nation is being handed over to a foreign power without a single shot being fired. Think about this, the 12-20 million illegals already here represents the largest invasion in world history! This Senate bill shows how far out of touch with reality these people have become. I say every one of them who voted for this should be voted out of office regardless of party affiliation.
It is about time someone took action against illegal aliens. I applaud the sheriff for the steps that he is taking in order to keep the community safe and keep law abiding citizens with jobs. I understand that people love the US but if you can’t become a legal citizen you aren’t a very good person in my eyes. I hope that maybe one day someone will put their foot down here in Clermont County, that would be nice since I am pretty sure that since hispanics are taking over this area that some of them probably aren’t here legally. I believe in what this sheriff is doing and I hope he gets support from higher powers for his effort to stop illegal aliens from coming into the United States!
Sheriff Jones - after reading about you in the paper “under your potrait of John Wayne”, I can only conclude that you are a racist just as he was. It is sad that people with your narrow view of the world are given a position of power.
Dear Sheriff Richard Jones,
I think you “Sheriiff” are a disgrace to this country!!! I wish for God to place you in your next life iin those countries where you will make $3 a day trying to support your family, and then see what kind of choices you have about life. Then, let’s see how strong you are as a man to up and leave your wife and children and oither family, so you can go live in a country where yoiu can send money home so that your children can afford to go to school and eat something else other than beans for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I support the illegal aliens here 100%!! They are trying to better their lives because their country obviously isn’t helping them out in their very poor circumstances. These men and women here are just trying to better their familes lives back home. Do you think they like living in a country where there are discriminating people like you trying to do harm to them? They are not trying to harm us Citizens. You are obviously trying to stand out to get attention to run for mayor, etc….something.. I can’t believe how far you are going to post up signs that read, “Illegal Aliens Here!” Absolutely Outrageous and uncalled for!!!
Imagine all of the billlions of dollars that the illegals do not claim in taxes every year, who keeps all of that money, HUH? They have helped out the economy tremendously in many ways, obviously you don’t read much on that subject. You say you are doing this to uphold the laws because you are an American! Please! We all immigrated from somewhere! “Your family” came here for a better life too!!!!! I think you are very hippocritical with your words and actions. It’s the ignorance of nasty people like you that destroy this countries peacefulness. You are still one of those old discriminating timers that think everyone will have your back on your racist issues!! Well you are wrong!!! We are a melting pot, if you understand that at all!!! America is land of the free!!!! Leave the immigrants alone!!! You think you are doing the citizens a huge favor, you are full of yourself!!! Eventually the bad you do onto others will return back into your life. Remember that!!! You are only destroying innocent lives!! Each time you send an “innocent” immigrant (One that you just pull over because you see that they are Hispanic) away to be deported, remember you are taking away from innocent children. They may not get fed or educated or dressed because of the negativity you are teaching your deputies.
I agree however that yes if they are in America actually “breaking” the law then they should be deported. But if they are innocently doing nothing and you are taking advantage of that, I pray for your pathetic soul. May god help you Sheriff!!
For thought: On your next vacation time off, you should travel to Mexico, Central, or South America to see the reason why these people come here in the first place. Become a missionary and go live with a family to see their struggles. I guarantee you would change your mind about what you are doing!!
Sheriff Jones - This country needs more patriots like you. God Bless You and keep up the great work you are doing.

Dear Sheriff Jones: I am so proud of you and the work you are doing to controll the illegal immigration problem in Butler County. Over the weekend, I was discussing your arrest of 10 illegal aliens with friends and family, the comment was “whats ten if we have twelve million.” I said that if the Federal Government allowed the Sheriff in every county in this country to enforce the immigration laws that are already on the books, we would not have a problem with illegal immigration. Thank you Sherriff Jones for taking action.
I congratulate the sheriff on being a National Hero, for that is exactly what he is! I admire his valor and convictions. Every sheriff should be just like him. As to Shamus O’Reilly calling John Wayne a racist is curious since all three of his wives were Hispanics! As to the comments of H. Smith, Yes, I feel for the poor people in those countries. However, they are the responsibility of those countries. America is a generous country and we try to help everyoneby giving more foreign aid than anyone else, but we have the moral obligation toprotect the American people first. The illegals need to go home and demand jobs from their own governments.
It’s amazing to think that this is how we American’s speak about one another. In all the letters and comments I’ve sat and read ,it’s come to see how we as individuals are truly unaware of the issues about the “illeagal immigrants.”Most of us have a (ancestor) family member that came into the world the same way these “hispanics” did. Yes crossing over the borders is part of it,but do people know that it’s about using every last breath that is in our body.Crawling on the ground because our legs can’t hold up our tierd and weak bodies. All because we see and admire what is on the other side,America. The land of hopes and dreams and oppurtunity.Alot of times I sit and think there better off in there countries,Why do people fight there whole life to get here, MONEY!!! because thats all they need.I thought we could offer Love, Peace and really show all people what we as americans are made of. What a diappointment. More and more each day you only here about what everybody is doing wrong, occasionally you here about the positive things we are supposed to be doing for eachother. Some times I feel we are so selfish and all we want is more.Jealousy, fear, mislead, anger, all that needs to be stopped. They take are jobs, well work harder. Are work desire and our dedication, look around you we’ve all become lazy and unwilling and thats where these hispanics have stepped in. When were all driving home in our deadend jobs there still working. Now if I was supposed to lay it out straight for everyone, Mr. Sheriff when hispanics are treated like you are labeling them your called a hero when blacks are treated like this it’ called racism. Why noone has called you a racist or a bigot i really hate to say that it’s not that far off. You say” illeagal immigrants” MEXICANS. Let me educate you, Since you are harassing only MEXICANS, list the other illegal people, Russians,Japanease, etc…………Lets inform our people the truth Sheriff J, Green cards/visas there for hispanics already here its impossible for them. NO, to the womans comment in your e-mails it does not take 2 weeks, Our people we are so quick to say whats on our mind though we do not take the time to get the facts.Theree is so much more to learn and understand.Mr. Jones you have a job were you are supposed to help people, How can you help people when you like noone.

I just watched Sheriff Jones on Fox and friends and i just wanted to say great job! BCOS should be congratulated and applauded by every agency of federal and state governments of this country. The problem of illegal aliens has been swept under the rug for to long and the people of America that want it to remain America need to speak out! Thank you for doing what needs to be done!
Thank you Sheriff! I saw your fight for America on Fox News this morning (4 a.m.) It’s refreshing to see someone in America stand for the rights of American citizens. Please come to any California county and clean this place up. By the way, bring a lot of help with you! My wife grew up in a mostly black community in Los Angeles (90% black, 10% hispanic). Now 20 years later, it’s 95% hispanic, 5% black. My three sons will be forced to learn Spanish or be unable to compete for most jobs requiring dealing with the public. Why would an employer hire my non-spanish speaking sons when he can hire a bi-lingual (english/spanish) person? This immigration issue is the biggest American giveaway ever. In So. Cal., there are illegal havens run by hispanic mayors that tell local law enforcement to not to enforce the law, not to ask for docs for legal status. I’m not a racist. I’m black and I do speak spanish. Bush’s plan is wrong on the immigration issue. Thank God for the House of Representatives who seem to have the only balls in Washington D.C. Illegal immigration is not a “jobs that Americans won’t do” issue. This is a fallacious, full of baloney campaign. Illegal immigration is a national sovereignty issue. I’ve been to mexico. Most cities and towns (excluding the resort areas) are a dump because Mexico has a quasi communist style economy and government, full of corruption. As a black American, I and my ancestors have put up with our share of issues with my fellow countrymen over 400 years. But I’ll be damned if I going to stand for someone sneaking (invading!) across the border and then have the government give away rights, privileges and standards of living that my people had to earn, fight for, and die for. Liberals are full of __it!

If you love those places so much you should go live their. I wish the sheriffs here in Alabama would get a spine and do the same things.
Sheriff Jones, I saw your segment on Fox News this morning. Thank you for what you are doing! I wish there were more sheriffs like you! I hope others will follow….
Watched you on FOX news this morning…..Need more people like you, the minutemen, Sheriff Joe and someone to come to Rhode Island to do the same law enforcement you men are doning. Congradulations!
Sheriff: Thank you so much for doing the right thing regarding the immigration issue. If all of our sheriffs behaved like you the illegals would eventually migrate back to their home countries.
You’re Walking Tall Sheriff.
I think Santa Anna would be proud of the US Senate. Here in South Western Oklahoma we already raised the white Flag. It’s a dirty little secret in the cotton fields and construction sites
Watching C-Span I have to say our Senators voted with the Majority of the American People. I have a new found respect for Jeff Sessions as well. I like the statement no Alien Left behind. How True
All I got to say is learn Spanish boys the Conquistadors are coming. Eventually they will be coming your way.
For the people who keep bringing up the fact that all Americans are immigrants.
Yes many Americans have ancestors who immigrated to America. They came over here legally, and unfortunately not all of them were allowed to do so by choice, for some it was by force. Before you get all hot an bothered by the actions of the sheriff stop and talk to someone who is an immigrant who has followed the proper procedures they are most often angered by the illegals actions. It isn’t the race or ancestry it is the fact that they are cheating the system. They are cheating the natural born citizens and the legal Citizens of their rights The illegals have a right to these benefits if they so choose if the don’t want to be legal and follow the rules the they should leave. It is very simple if they want everything our country has to offer then they should also except the rules we have to offer.
Thank you sheriff there are a few radicals out there, but as you can see the county and country support you.
For “Jodi’ and others:
Be careful what you read and hear. The media has got you using their words. ‘Illegal immigrant’ is a misnomer. The correct definiition is ‘illegal alien’. And that term does not make any distinctions for country of origin.
Also don’t get in the trap of comparing the current situation with anything from the past. There has not been any thing like the current flood of illegals coming into our country with no scrutiny at all. Despite wht the liberals would have you believe, we still have the right and responsibility to defend our couontry’s borders and to determine who should be admitted into it. America is not a day care for the world.
I rather hope we would not turn away those who apply legally to come in. All we ask is that you do it the correct way, according to the laws of this country you are seeking admission to. The media would have you believe we owe the world everything we have here and that just isn’t so.
We have been so berated by the liberals for being successful that we are now expected to have a guilty conscience because we are.
Being against illegal aliens has nothing to do with where you are from, where I’m from or where any of us came from. It has to do with the law. We obey the laws of our country and society. We must to have a orderly society. Dissent is welcome, but within the bounds of good order and discipline. If we disagree with a law, we press to have it changed, through the system in place to do that, the courts and the legislatures. Trying to force your way by any other means is unjust and arrogant to those who disagree with you. We all have opinions. We all have certain issues that really get our passion going. In the midst of all the confusion and controversy, let’s just remember to give the other guy (or gal) the respect for their position, even when we disagree.
The name calling and the references to the old days are beneath us I hope. (Remember, bigots eixst in all colors and languages, even today.) Resorting to impugning someone’s character or ancestry is a sign of intolerance and weakness. We can agree to disagree, but if we cannot have a meaningful dialog between the many, many different and sometimes contradictory sides of this issue, how can we ever make it right ?
Granting citizenship to those here illegally is not a fair solution. But then what is ? I don’t know.
Making those here illegally return home to apply and try again is not the answer. But what is ?
There will be no answer that satisfies all concerned, but in the end if we have had a civilized discourse on the issues and reached the best solution we can reach, then that is the solution.
Let’s not go to the extremes of the issues and refuse to acknowledge others may feel just as passionately about their position as you do with yours.
Didn’t mean to ramble so.
That’s my position and I’m sticking with it.
Regards to you all.
Well, Sheriff Jones, I’m not a resident of Ohio, I’m from Missouri - and we are facing many of the same problems you are. I have tried to interest local law enforcement in the problem, and initially I achieved some fairly positive responses. We were able to use numerous violations of the building codes & other laws against fraudulent documents to pursue some of the illegal aliens. They also tend to attract a lot of attention driving (without plates, tags, insurance, often without a license). Unfortunately, the nearest ICE office is all of the way in Chicago, Illinois, about 340 miles from where I am. ICE wont come and get them, so after their fines are paid, or whatever terms are up if they have committed a more serious offense - my local police & corrections officers are forced to release them right back out onto the streets of our community. Its very frustrating for myself & for all of the officers involved whom are growing bitter that they can not seem to accomplish much with their efforts. Though we did at least evict 18 people that were sharing the same house and considerably disturbing the peace.
We have been unable to garner support to go after the businesses we know are hiring illegals, and this is a political matter - the mayor doesn’t want to ruffle their feathers, and its largely the same situation in the two neighboring communities.
I’m wondering if you have any tips on how to get ICE to respond? Our efforts would be much more meaningful if we knew they would lead to deportation after sentences & citations. Can we bill DHS/ICE for time holding them? Money is a part of the problem as well, as mostly this is burden falling entirely by us for what we see as rightfully the federal governments failure to do its job. Do we have to get our local law enforcement deputized by DHS to be taken seriously? You seem to have gotten a lot further into the process than we are, and I could really use your advice on what has worked for you, and happy to share what has worked for us.
I was very disappointed to learn how few jails & prisons have arrangements with ICE to deport criminal aliens when their sentences are up. I’ve also been extremely disappointed with ICE’s response when asked to come get felons for deportation. They simply wont do it most of the time. No matter what ones feelings on illegal immigration, I think we can all agree we don’t want to just turn these felons back on the streets that shouldn’t be here in the first place. Some of those ICE has declined to pick up have been in prison for very serious offenses.
6 years ago this issue was not even on the map in my state, if you said illegal alien it meant a Bosnian or Iraqi refugee with papers problems. So this influx is somewhat new for us. I am amazed at the number of misconceptions law enforcement had going into this. At first I was told the county deals with it at that level (since that is where anyone with a long pre-trial and moderate-length post trial stay will likely end up.) I contacted every single correctional facility in my area including those in charge of the parole system - not a single one had a formal arrangement with anyone to handle it. This shocked a lot of people here, and in particular our chief of police. Everyone in the process thought someone else handled it, no one could believe that there was no system in place to deal with it. I hope that isn’t the case in your area of Ohio, but I have a feeling it probably is.
I wish you well, I like what you are doing. Probably better develop a thick skin in a hurry though. There is a portion of the media & public that is downright vicious on this issue, and they aren’t above taking things out of context, slander, threats, and worse in making their point. You seemed like you handled it pretty well from what I saw. Better you than & me in front of the cameras though.
Hello,
My name is Don Pratt and I am a Director of Alamo Alliance. I am sending this email to various groups and people around the country in the hopes of collecting signatures of American citizens who oppose this destructive and unfair blanket amnesty bill for illegal aliens. Please join us and hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of other Americans as we voice our opposition to this destructive and unfair Senate Amnesty Bill, S.2611. Please spread the word by sending this to everyone you can! We don’t have much time! You can view and sign the petition at our site http://www.alamoalliance.org.
Thank you,
Dewine and Voinovich voted for the Senate bill of amnesty and Boehner voted against the House bill of immigration enforcement. It is obvious we the people are not being represented in Washington and I hope we all remember that when these guys are up for reelection.
All of you who oppose what Sheriff Jones is doing are the racists. Because 80% of illegal aliens are from Latin America, accomodating illegal aliens discriminates based on national origin, it is racism.
Sheriff Jones opposes this racism.
For more info go to http://www.fairimmigration.com.
One more thing. John Wayne had a string of Latino wifes. Doesn’t sound like a racist to me.
Here’s something to thing about… I received this via e-mail…and agree 100%. Keep up the good work Sheriff! God bless…
Cheap Labor
Isn’t that what the whole immigration issue is about?
Business don’t want to pay a decent wage,
consumers don’t want expensive produce,
Govenment will tell you Americans don’t want the jobs
but the bottom line is cheap labor.
“The phrase “cheap labor” is a myth, a farce, and a lie.
There is no such thing as “cheap labor.”
Take, for example, an illegal who sneaks in here with his wife and five children.
He takes a job for five or six dollars an hour.
At that wage with six dependents he pays no income tax, yet at the end of the year if he files income tax he gets an “earned income credit” of up to $3,200 free.
He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent,
He qualifies for food stamps.
He qualifies for free (no deductible, no co-pay) health care.
His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school.
He requires bilingual teachers and books.
He qualifies for relief from high energy bills.
If he is or becomes, aged, blind or disabled he qualifies for SSI.
Once qualified for SSI he can qualify for medicare.
All of this is at that taxpayers expense.
He doesn’t have to worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance.
Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material.
He cannot be fired, harassed, or sued.
He and his family receive the equivalent of $20 to $30 an hour in benefits.
Working Americans are lucky to have $5 or $6 an hour left after paying their bills and his.
Cheap labor? YEAH RIGHT!”
Work hard and pay your taxes, 12 million illegal aliens are counting on you!

Kudos to the sheriff. For once a man appears on the scene who is dedicated to upholding the law. The sheriff is a true descendant of the great men of our nation’s past. I again have hope that America ” will not perish from this earth “.
Doesn’t Sherrif Jones have other important things to do besides laso up all the illegals. If he arrests illegals, they should be deported I agree. But Butler County has many many other problems, and the only thing he cares about is the illegals.
It’s about time we had a public official who did not kowtow to overpaid, overbred special interests who just want to have cheap domestic servants and undercut the ability of ordinary Americans to have a decent life. The Federal government has reduced prosecution of illegals by 95% since 1999! Obviously, the elitists in Washington want America to drown in a sea of illegals. It’s time for us all to step up to the plate. Of course, real action won’t happen until the predators who employ illegals get the treatment they deserve–the fate of traitors.
Your a Hero Sherrif. Thank you.
God Bless your great Sheriff! Keep up the good work!
Scooter

This is all anyone needs to know about illegal aliens:
“We call things racism just to get attention. We reduce complicated problems to racism, not because it is racism, but because it works.”
— Alfredo Gutierrez, political consultant, as quoted by Richard de Uriarte, The Phoenix Gazette, March 14, 1992 (quoted in The ProEnglish Advocate, 1st quarter, 2002).
According to data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff, on the day of the “Day Without Immigrants” march, Los Angeles had a reduction in the following:
67.8% reduction - shoplifting
82% reduction - auto theft
28% reduction- murders/ violent crimes/ rapes
73% reduction- vandalism / tagging
54% reduction- drug related offenses (excludes the march area)
31% reduction - domestic violence cases
64% reduction- misdemeanor cases
I am embarrassed to say I live in southwest Ohio where Sheriff Jones works and where prejudice and racism still exist.
Excellent work. Keep up the good work. America is behind you.
John
Yes, I do agree that it is a great thing you are doing…instilling fear into a powerless population whose very work is what allows for many businesses to report large gains. Those illegals, I tell you, they’re all one in the same are they not? Much like all Anglo-Americans are racist, pompous, materialist capitalist exploiters.
Do continue with your round-up’s sir. But do not forget, that the country you adamantly love was founded by an invading group of immigrants who raped, murdered, and plundered the natives land. Even after this, much of the U.S. was built upon the labor of illegal aliens from Europe. Are these illegals any different from those crossing our borders now? If so, please address these differences; I am ever so curious to see what these differences are.
I doubt this comment will be “approved” by the sheriff and made public, but it sounds to me like he’s just a xenophobic fascist.
Go, Sheriff Jones!!! Great Job. I wish we had more like you.
Thanks for doing a what everyone else should be doing!
The real issue here is about Power
The Chamber of Commerce wants Illegal Labor to Maximize Profits for the privileged few
The Catholic Church wants more Illegal’s to fill up the churches
The Democrats want more voters
The Republicans want to appease the Chamber of Commerce also since many of the immigrants would be Catholic they would have a problem supporting the Dems long terms cause of the issue of Abortion.
The indigenous Hispanic People want more of a say in what goes on with greater numbers this will eventually come. Also many have relatives who want to come to the US.
As far of the rest of us, I guess we want it both ways we want to get our 39 cent head of cabbage but do not want to pay for social services, of Illegal Labor nor do we want to see actually Americans lose jobs to these people. Nor do we want Vicente Fox running things here in America.
From my thinking the answer is an actual guest worker program that would incorporate these people. Guest worker meaning work support your family several years and eventually leave.
What would happen if we bordered China would we allow over a Billion Chinese to come into our country use up our social services?
I guess you can consider me a Racist cause I would definitely oppose that.
I live in California, San Diego county to be exact and I wish that we had law enforcement personel here with the courage that Sheriff Jones and his Deputies have.
Our sheriff won’t even attempt to contact anyone in the immigration control when he is getting ready to release an illegal alien, let alone be proactive about the issue.
Believe me, living this close to the border, this is a major problem.
Thank you sheriff Jones, deputies and citizens of Butler county for your courage to do what is right.
I know that you are being called many names and probably recieving threats for your stand.
I fly the Colors of the USA on my house and vehicles and have had enough problems just doing that. Other people I know have had andt-illegal alien stickers on their vehicles and had major vandalisim damage done.
Once again, Thank You Sheriff Jones and your Deputies.
Sheriff,
You are to be commended.
If someone comes to this country properly, I am all for it. There are houses in my neighborhood for rent and I would love to have that person for a neighbor.
If someone comes here against the law, they need to be captured, fined, and returned to their point of origin.
If you decide to run for office here in Oklahoma, I will vote for you.
Larry Ortega
Thank you so much!!!
I just married someone from another country, and we had to go through the obstacles and cost to get her legal.
I have been rear-ended twice now by an “Illegal” who didn’t speak English didn’t have insurance and do not posses a driver’s license. Luckily I have a car w/ real bumpers and wasn’t injured “I should be lucky”.
Emergency rooms are closing all around my city Los Angeles.
For those of who you who disagree, and want to jump w/ the racist remark. I beg of you to move to Mexico, who knows maybe you could make your utopia there. People like this make me sick, so come on and take your vacation in East L.A. and once you get the utopian feeling pack the kids and make a run for south of the boarder!!!!
Sherriff please come to LA the weather is great and once you clean this place up you will love it!!!
GREAT JOB!!!
Dear Sheriff,
I heard you speak on the John and Ken show in LA this afternoon. I completely support what you are attempting to do in your county.
Out here in California we are represented by left-wing radicals who want to provide illegals with driver’s licenses and college aid. Illegal aliens who attend college pay the in-state tuition rate. A student that comes from another state has to pay the higher out-of-state rate. This is clearly discrminatory.
Keep up the great work and don’t back down.
Wayne Pistey
Lakewood, CA
Thank you for trying to enforce the law. Here in California there is no such person like yourself. I wish we had a Sherrif like you here, it looks like you folks take care of business in your department. Best wishes.
Sheriff Butler:
Keep up the good work. I’m glad to see you doing something besides writing traffic tickets. We have featured your work in our newsletter several times at http://www.sendemback.org .
Employer visits by your deputies are worth far more than work of the incompetent Border Patrol. They only catch one in three illegal aliens. A Mexican deported from Indiana loses thousands of dollars. If that same Mexican is caught on the Arizona border, he will be back accross the next day.
Illegal aliens cost society $80 billion per year in crime, education of their children, and welfare. This will buy of a lot of lettuce.
I visited a friend in rural Nebraska three years back. The place is packed with Mexican illegal aliens working on farms and meat packing plants.
Three of them just raped an American in Maine in the last week. They were helping a Dutch company build greenhouses, see http://morningsentinel.mainetoday.com/news/local/2872589.shtml
Only work like yours will get rid of this menace.
Thank you, Sheriff. Illegal immigrants in your county are now saying they may have to “return to Mexico” soon. Mission accomplished! Let’s hope they really do. They can come back via legal means. Otherwise, afuera!
Why don’t you leave those poor people alone?? The majority of them aren’t a threat, they are people who hold up our economy by doing simple but needed jobs. Maybe if you got to know a Hispanic immigrant and became friends with one of them you would feel differently.
Thanks so much for your committment to addressing the illegal alien issue!. I am not a resident of Butler County or Ohio. I live in Alabama and heard of th charge your leading to address the problem. I applaud your efforts. We need a man like you in the White House!
Don Jones
Killen, AL
“The majority of them aren’t a threat”
So if say… only 1 million of the 13+ million illegals are rapists, thieves, murderers, and general criminals you’re ok with that? Wow!
“Maybe if you got to know a Hispanic immigrant and became friends with one of them you would feel differently.”
Maybe if you were a victim of one of their crimes, YOU would feel differently.
Goes both ways doesn’t it?
I’m not a resident of Ohio, but I wanted to thank you anyway for what you are doing to stem this ILLEGAL immigration problem. I only wish that the Californian government where I live would catch on as well. Half of my family are Immigrants (LEGAL immigrants), I am all for immigration but only when it is done legally. Everyone should have a fair chance at starting a life in this great country, but NO ONE should be able to break our laws, skirt in front of all those who go through legal immigration procedures, and then demand that legal tax paying citizens pay there way for their decision to break the law. Some of those ranting in your comment section need to understand the issue is about ILLEGAL immigration, not LEGAL immigration. Again, thank you for what you are doing to protect legal citizens of whom you are responsible for protecting. Illegal immigrants are criminals; thank you for doing your job.
One of the federal laws that is often overlooked is the 1996 Illegal Immigration Act. Below is the text of that law. I believe this is the enabling law for you, and it puts US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, (known La Raza supporter) in a difficult position for not enforcing or complying with the law.

Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996
Summary
Overview
The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (the 96 Act) Pub L. 104-208, was enacted on September 30, 1996. It includes increases in criminal penalties for immigration-related offenses, authorization for increases in enforcement personnel, and enhanced enforcement authority. There are a number of measures designed to enhance Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) presence and enforcement at the border. The 96 Act undertakes a comprehensive reorganization of the process of removal for inadmissible and deportable aliens, including a provision for the expedited removal of inadmissible aliens arriving at ports of entry. The 96 Act requires the conducting of three types of employment authorization verification pilot programs. It includes restrictions on the eligibility of aliens for public benefits and imposes new requirements on sponsors of alien relatives for immigration. A brief description of the Act’s principal provisions follows.
Changes in Exclusion and Deportation Processes
Expedited Removal.
The 1996 Act amends section 235(b)(1) of the INA, effective April 1, 1997, to provide that, if an examining immigration officer determines that an arriving alien is inadmissible for having engaged in fraud or misrepresentation or because the alien lacks valid documents, the officer shall order the alien removed without further hearing or review, unless the alien states a fear of persecution or an intention to apply for asylum
An alien subject to expedited removal who states a fear of persecution or an intention to apply for asylum shall be referred for interview by an asylum officer. If the officer finds that the alien has a credible fear of persecution, the alien shall be detained for further consideration of the application for asylum under normal non-expedited removal proceedings. If the asylum officer determines that the alien does not have a credible fear of persecution, the asylum officer will order the alien removed from the United States. The alien may request that an immigration judge review the asylum officer’s credible fear determination. If the immigration judge also finds that the alien does not have a credible fear of persecution, the alien will be removed from the United States pursuant to the asylum officer’s order. If the immigration judge determines that the alien does have a credible fear, the underlying order shall be vacated. The Service may then place the alien in normal, non-expedited removal proceedings. Throughout the process of administrative review, INS shall detain the alien.
Removal Proceedings.
The 1996 Act undertakes a comprehensive revision of the procedures for removal of aliens. It consolidates exclusion and deportation proceedings into one removal proceeding. These new provisions become effective on April 1, 1997 for proceedings commenced on or after that date. The INA now provides that an alien who enters without inspection (EWI) will be subject to a determination of admissibility.
Aliens may seek cancellation of removal through two new provisions intended to replace the waiver under former INA section 212(c) and suspension of deportation under former INA section 244. These new forms of relief are available to both inadmissible and deportable aliens. Under section 240A(a), aliens lawfully admitted for permanent residence for not less than five years who have resided continuously in the United States for seven years after having been admitted in any status may request cancellation of removal provided they have not been convicted of an aggravated felony. Under section 240A(b), an alien who has been physically present in the United States for a continuous period of at least 10 years, who has been a person of good moral character, and who has not been convicted of a criminal offense that could result in the alien’s removal from the United States may seek cancellation of removal and adjustment of status, provided the alien has a spouse, parent or child who is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident. Cancellation under section 240A(b) may only be granted if aliens demonstrate that their removal from the United States would result in exceptional and extremely unusual hardship to a spouse, parent or child who is a lawful permanent resident or U.S. citizen. The Attorney General may not adjust the status of more than 4,000 aliens under section 240A(b) in any fiscal year.
Judicial Review.
There is no judicial review of: (1) any judgment whether to grant relief under section 212(h) or (i), 240A, 240B, or 245; (2) any decision or action of the Attorney General which is specified to be in the discretion of the Attorney General (except a discretionary judgment whether to grant asylum); or (3) any decision in the case of an alien who is removable on the basis of most criminal convictions, except an alien deportable for having committed a single crime involving moral turpitude.
Criminal Aliens.
The Act amends the definition of “aggravated felony” by: adding crimes of rape and sexual abuse of a minor; lowering the fine threshold for crimes relating to money laundering and certain illegal monetary transactions from $100,000 to $10,000; lowering the imprisonment threshold for crimes of theft, violence, racketeering and document fraud from five years to one year; and lowering the loss threshold for crimes of tax evasion and fraud and deceit from $200,000 to $10,000. This section also adds new offenses to the definition relating to gambling, bribery, perjury, revealing the identity of undercover agents, and transporting prostitutes. It deletes the requirement that a crime of alien smuggling be for commercial advantage in order to be considered an aggravated felony, but exempts a first offense involving the alien’s spouse, child or parent. The amendment provides that the amended definition of “aggravated felony” applies to offenses that occurred before, on, or after the date of enactment of the 96 Act.
Enhanced Enforcement and Penalties for Alien Smuggling and Document Fraud
Title II of the 1996 Act increases criminal penalties for alien smuggling and allows wiretap authority to investigate alien smuggling, document fraud, citizenship fraud and passport fraud. It eliminates the requirement that a smuggling offense have been “committed for financial gain” in order to be considered a RICO-predicate crime. Title II increases criminal penalties for document fraud and permits criminal asset forfeiture for passport and visa-related offenses. It establishes criminal penalties for false claims to U.S. citizenship and illegal voting by aliens in federal elections. There are new provisions that broaden the definition of document fraud for purposes of section 274C of the Act and criminal penalties for failure to disclose one’s role as a preparer of a false application for immigration benefits.
Worksite Enforcement and Verification
Title IV of the Act requires the establishment, within one year of enactment, of three distinct pilot programs, each of which will last for four years. The pilots include: 1) a basic pilot program, 2) a citizen attestation program, and 3) a machine-readable document program. Participation in the pilot programs will be voluntary on the part of employers, except with regard to the executive and legislative branches of the federal government and certain employers who have been found to be in violation of certain sections of the INA. Volunteer employers may have their elections apply to all hiring in all state(s) in which a pilot program is operating, or to their hiring in only one or more pilot program states or places of hiring within any such states.
Employers participating in any of the pilot programs are shielded from civil or criminal liability for actions taken in good faith reliance on information provided through the confirmation system.
Restrictions on Benefits for Aliens
Title V contains amendments to the welfare bill, the Social Security Act, and the INA which are directed at limiting aliens’ access to public benefits. Proof of citizenship is required to receive public benefits and verification of immigration status is required for Social Security and higher-educational assistance. A transition period (until April 1, 1997) is established for aliens who are currently receiving food stamps.
The requirements for an affidavit of support for sponsored immigrants are tightened and that document is defined as an enforceable contract. The deeming requirements for attribution of a sponsor’s income and resources are narrowed (at least 125 percent of the Federal Poverty Line). States are authorized to deem income of the sponsor for the purposes of benefits under means-tested programs, to limit assistance to aliens, and to distinguish among classes of aliens in providing general cash public assistance. Several verification and eligibility requirements are established for receipt of housing assistance or other financial assistance related to housing.
Title V provides for reimbursement to states or local governments for costs related to emergency medical treatment of illegal aliens where those entities can not obtain reimbursement from other sources.
Refugees, Parole, and Asylum
Title VI makes several changes to the asylum process which codified many existing INS regulations. In addition, Title VI amends the definition of refugee at section 101(a)(42) to provide that a person who has been forced to abort a pregnancy or to undergo involuntary sterilization, or who has been persecuted for failure or refusal to undergo such a procedure or for other resistance to a coercive population control program, shall be deemed to have been persecuted on account of political opinion. Additionally, a person who has a well-founded fear of being compelled to undergo such a procedure or being subject to such persecution shall be deemed to have a well-founded fear of persecution on account of political opinion. Section 207(a) of the INA is amended to provide that not more than 1,000 refugees shall be admitted or granted asylum on the basis of persecution under coercive population-control policies.
INA section 212(d)(5) is amended to provide that the Attorney General’s parole authority may be exercised only on a case-by-case basis for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit. This section also requires that not later than 90 days after the end of the fiscal year, the Attorney General shall report to the Committees on the Judiciary of the House of Representatives and the Senate describing the number and categories of aliens paroled into the United States under section 212(d)(5), along with other specified information.
Section 208 of the INA is amended to provide that an alien who is physically present in, or who arrives in, the United States may apply for asylum in accordance with section 208 or, where applicable, section 235(b)(1). However, an alien may not apply for asylum if the Attorney General determines that the alien can be returned to a safe third country pursuant to a bilateral agreement, unless the Attorney General finds it in the public interest for the alien to receive asylum in the United States. An applicant for asylum must demonstrate by clear and convincing evidence that the application has been filed within one year of arriving in the United States (unless the alien can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the Attorney General that extraordinary circumstances caused the delay in filing an application prior to the deadline), and an alien is not eligible to apply for asylum if the alien has previously applied for and been denied asylum. These bars do not apply if the alien demonstrates the existence of changed circumstances which materially affect the applicant’s eligibility for asylum.
A provision is included that provides for the conditional repeal of the Cuban Adjustment Act upon the establishment of democracy in Cuba.
Authorization of Appropriations, Report Requirements and Miscellaneous Provisions
In the event of a mass influx of aliens off the coast of the United States or at a land border, the Attorney General may authorize a state or local law enforcement officer, with the consent of the officer’s superiors, to perform duties of immigration officers under the INA. An amendment to section 103 of the INA clarifies the authority of the Attorney General to use appropriated funds for the care and security of individuals detained by the Service through agreements with state and local governments. This provision also grants authority for the Attorney General to contract with state and local authorities for construction, renovation and acquisition of equipment in support of the detention of aliens held by the INS in state and local facilities. The bill provides for an increase in Border Patrol agents up to 1,000 per year beginning in FY 97. However, the bill also requires that these new officers, to the maximum extent practicable, be among INS sectors along the border in proportion to the level of illegal crossings of those borders measured in the preceding fiscal year.
Section 245(i) of the INA is amended to provide that an alien applying for adjustment of status under this provision shall pay a fee of $1,000, not less than $800 of which shall be paid into an Immigration Detention Account. This section also amends INA section 286 to provide for creation and operation of the Immigration Detention Account.
The Act limits claims under the legalization provisions of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, to aliens who, in fact, filed an application for legalization under that section within the prescribed time limits, or attempted to do so but their application was refused by an immigration officer.
Good Day All,
I live in Story County Iowa. I work as a grunt line laborer in a $100,000,000 a year in sales meat processing facility. We have 2-3 dozen ’suspected’ illegal aliens employed here. Some are actually quite brazen about it. Supervisors/Human Resources and possibly the Owner know of their status. Our facility is located directly across the street from the Story County Courthouse. 2 weeks ago, one of the suspected illegal aliens was pulled over for speeding/no license/no insurance on the way to work. A Story County Deputy was kind enough to give the gentleman a ride to work(since the Deputy of course could not let him continue to drive.) I would love to see this person’s ‘identification’ that apparently passed muster enough as to not warrant arrest!
An interesting situation has occured to a couple of our illegals. The IRS is mandating they change their W-2’s.(BTW- To all who feel that illegal aliens are ’screwed’ out of their’earned’ taxes)…ALL of the illegals I work with and probably most in the USA; fill out the W-2 with a false number of dependant children. 7-8-9 children. No,no,no they do not ‘pay’ taxes. None are withheld! There are grunt line worker illegals at my work place making $1.50 less per hour than machine operators, yet are taking home more per week.
My take on the whole mess is $$$. Rather the GREED of companies that want a bundle made quick. Interesting to think how many of these ’successfull’ companies would have been actually successfull if they did not cheat at the rules. And that is precisely what they are doing…cheating…who cheats? Losers who can not play fair and win. How do you effect change? Hit them in the wallet. (Always worked for me!!!!,lol.)
Butler County; ya’ll have a great Sheriff. He is trying to RAISE the quality of living of your fair county.
Entrepreneurs take note; might be some wonderful business ventures presented if the Sheriff is successfull. Have a successfull business. Realize your grunts make you your money. Allow them a comfortable living. You do not need to expand, expand, expand,be number one,be the biggest,be the best, aquire competition. It all leads….well…to where we are today.
I’m a ‘cynical’ realist. As long as the greed is allowed to persevere the current situation will only get progressively worse. In all actuality; it may be too late now. I see things coming to a very ugly head in the future. Ever play the board game Risk? We may be toast already…..
Lets face it the Senate and the President don’t care about the working people in this country. Especailly those on the lower economic ladder who work the landscaping construction and manufacturing trades. Maybe we should elect some illegal alien politicians and they could take their jobs?
Maybe than they would care.
Wow. To read all this animosity allocated towards illegal immigrants is ignominious. There is an overwhelming tone of racial tension within these postings. It is also evident that people are not educated well enough on the topic at hand. Illegals do not take from social services; on the contrary, they ply these services, such as health care, in an exponentially less quantity when compared to caucasians. They are here to work. But of course many of you do not read peer reviewed journals or effectuate any research of your own thus are unable to fathom and resolve for yourself, the truth. Instead people believe what is shoved into their heads by some xenophobic racist who gives credence to jingoism. Now if all the others are terrified of competition maybe it is time to value education a little more and be a little more competitive for more prestigious billets, and 8% of the population with graduate degrees in Butler county will not suffice. You cannot get comfortable in this society as there is always another who can perform your job well or even better. And let us also consider that only .13% of Butler county is Native American, the only true americans. With this fact, the rest of the population is ultimately pilgrim. If you believe in the Sheriff’s ideology of throwing out immigrants, then I imagine that Butler county’s future population will diminish to .13% native american people. Seek the truth first because ignorance is bliss.
I came to leave a comment for the sherrif, in regards to his yellow sign, “Illegal Aliens Here” and pointing at his jail. It becomes so easy to read statistics about illegal aliens and filter out the ones that back your idealogy. The more difficult thing to do is to be a man of humility and try to understand the reason for their struggle. Then and only then can you make a judgement about their actions.

Wow. I am taken aback by the arrogance of “Michael M.D.”. Apparently he feels we Midwesterners are idiots. He is concerned about any animosity toward illegal aliens but he has plenty of animosity toward the people of Butler County and apparently he feels that is acceptable. Well I am not a person who is all that interested in the illegal immigrant situation but I am a Butler County resident and I am offended. I am not an idiot and therefore I realize that it makes sense for Caucasians to receive exponentially more social services than Hispanics. Caucasians are an exponentially larger portion of the population and pay exponentially more money into the system. So although you may think we are idiots we have enough common sense to realize that your little exponential comment is a load of garbage.
I am an avid blogger and as such I know how to find blog information like where a comment was made from. I want everyone to know that the condescending Michael MD made his comment from a computer on the UCLA campus. I have also browsed the campus directory to find there are no MDs named Michael.
Now Michael (or whatever your name is) if you had done your research you would realize that in the last census (year 2000) 21.1% of Butler County residents over age 25 had a Bachelors degree or higher. And that number has undoubtedly risen due to the population boom in the middle/upper class regions of our county. But I am sure your research told you that… You also stated that Butler County is .13% Native American and that number will diminish to .13%. You may want to consider working on your math skills.
Look Mike, you don’t know a thing about this county or the people who live here so save your b.s. for the people of California. And by the way you are an MD in a state where all the hospitals are going bankrupt so who is the idiot?
